7. Why aren’t doctors prescribing Xando or Extrim?

These were the 2 products that were endorsed by our 2 most popular actresses, Fann Wong and Zoe Tay, probably about 5 years ago. For Zoe Tay who has just given birth at that time, I can still understand why she needed to lose weight, since she was probably at 10 kgs over weight after giving birth, but as for Fann Wong, I really don’t understand why and where she needed to lose weight? Many women may probably kill someone in order to have her kind of body, and yet she says she has to lose weight. Although the commercial did mention that it is for tummy weight loss, but I really can’t see much of a fat tummy from her. Anyway, it has been 5 years since these two commercials came out, and I am not really sure if these two products are still around or not.

My main question at the time that these two products were introduced, were that how come doctors are not introducing them? Just like many other commercials, they were pretty convincing, not only were they endorsed by our two very known and respected public figures, but after that they were many testimonials from seems to be like real consumers of the products. It is that doctors don’t believe them? Or is it that they know it won’t work? I have this experience about asking doctors opinions on weight loss products, and this may be one of the reasons why they might not prescribe such weight loss products.

Actually most western practice for medicines has their own kind of weight loss products. They probably won’t prescribe products which are sold by natural health Products Company because they cannot be patented. So the weight loss products that they produced will mostly have some kind of patented drugs in it. But it seems like if there are such contents in it, there are side effects that tag along as well. I have used one of them before and it scared the shit out of me. It has probably side effects worse than my arthritis or high blood medications. My family doctor did mention that it is very effective, and that it will help me lose 1 to 2 kgs per week. What she didn’t mention was the side effect that it may bring. After using the products and learning about it, then I know that there are many products from doctors, which are far more effective than the ones I saw on TV, but also far more scarier. There is one used by my cousin, that according to her doctor, can only used it for like 3 sessions or so, after that you will have to maintain your weight through other means. The reasons as I have heard from my cousin, is that it will cause dehydration and if prolong used, it will cause damages to some of the organs. Scary stuffs right? I really can’t believe and understand why my cousin is willing to risk that chance just to lose weight. It wouldn’t be worth it, right? What’s the point of having a body like Fann Wong but may have to be bed ridden or lives shorten? If you remember the Slim 10 case that kill one woman and cause two of our local celebrity their kidneys you will probably understand what I am trying to say. It is not worth it!

So, if you need to lose weight and are thinking of approaching your family’s doctor for help, I will suggest that you will be better off taking Xando or Extrim, although with the money spent, it may not be able to turn your body to look like Fann Wong or Zoe Tay, but at least it will not cost you your kidney.

6. Why is Zoe Tay able to lose 11kgs in weeks, and why didn’t she recommend it to Moses Lim or Chen Li Ping?
Before I write anything here, I know that actually many of us fat people know that some commercials are mostly exaggerating or some times even worse, bull shit. But all of us are just buying a hope, that there is such a miracle product. So, in case you are not a Singaporean and don’t know who Zoe Tay, Moses Lim and Chen Li Ping is, let me tell you. They are all popular artists of Singapore. And in a few words, this is their description.
Zoe has always been slim, the only times that she was fat was when she just gave birth to her baby. After that, she did a commercial for a slimming product, and in no time, she when back almost to her usual self, the slim one. She claims in the commercial that she lost 11 kgs in don’t know how many weeks, without much effort. How much effort would you need to swallow some pill, not much right?
Moses Lim, on the other hand, has always been the very fat one, he is so fat that even he makes fun of himself and became a comedian. I think Moses Lim is in his late forties or early fifties. This means he was fat for like at least 20 years already since I can remember him on television.
Chen Li Ping, when first appear on National Television, was young, pretty and very slim, but now, as according to the media, after contracting an illness, believe to be thyroid, put on a lot weight and seems like she can’t do much to reduce it. She even cried in a variety show saying how much this illness affected her life, and her career. But fortunately for her, she manages to get a few good roles that suits her new appearance and I think may have won an award for one particular role.
So, here comes the question. Why is Zoe Tay able to lose 11kgs in weeks, and why didn’t she recommend it to Moses Lim or Chen Li Ping? They definitely know each other, our Singapore television station is not like Hollywood, with a few hundred thousand artists. We probably got two thousand, but I will bet $1 to $1,000 that they definitely know each other. I think if all of us fat people sit down and cool down to think about it, we might just be able to come out with a few possible reasons.
First, although it may be true that Zoe Tay did lose some weight with the help of that particular product, it was also because of her way of living, meaning the way she eats or what she eats. You see, Zoe Tay was also a model, so she may be the type that eats only 2 meals a day, and that the 2 meals are 2 stalks of some leafy vegetables, and worst, may be she eats it raw. So unless Chen Li Ping or Moses Lim is able to eat just like her, the products may just help after 10 years of eating them. Just a reminder, she lost 11kgs in weeks.
Second, because she just gave birth, could it be the first 5 kgs lost was actually just water? It is still not too bad to lose 6 kgs in weeks, but as a father of 2, I think losing weight from after giving birth and just to lose fat from the body, may be 2 completely different things, right? It may be just as difficult, but it definitely feels different. One is changing the way you have been eating, the other, going back to the way you have been eating. I have seen far more successful weight loss cases for those after birth than those who just want to lose weight because they are overweight.
Third, for Zoe Tay, since she is endorsing such a product, to her, the losing weight part seems to have a shorter dead line, when compared to someone who doesn’t have a dead line. In fact, to her it may be a full time thing, to lose that excess weight, compare to us fat persons that need to buy the products from our own money. And having said that, for her, cost for the products wasn’t an issue, although she may be already a millionaire, but it is still an advantage if you can get it for free right, especially before confirming that the products really works for you before paying for it, right?
So, my conclusion that why didn’t Zoe Tay recommend the products she endorses to her 2 very fat colleagues, is that, you will need to combine diet, exercise and endless supplies of slimming products, with a dead line, to be able to lose 11 kgs in weeks. Or worst scenario is that she did recommend them, but it did not work for them.
Any way, this article was written about 5 years ago when Zoe Tay just gave birth. Now it seems like Zoe Tay, being more than 40 years old, show signs of her weight fluctuating. Although considering with her age, she is still slim and beautiful, but is not really the type that a swim suit company will want her as a model. No offence, Aunty Zoe. Chen Li Ping, also have her share of weight fluctuation, but seems a happier person nowadays. May be she just got used to her new look and, weight and that, she seems to get roles after roles suited to her new look. But everyone loves her no matter she is the young, pretty, kind but blur teacher, or the fat mom mom selling coconut rice in Holland Village. But I think her weight situation can be resolved, only if she resolves her illnesses first, probably with enough fish oil, which help in inflammatory ailments. But I think like many misinformed overweight persons, she may not want to add more oil to her fats. As for Moses Lim, his last appearance was an exciting one, that he has lost 10 over kgs. And he has not been in the lime light for, I think, a few years already. There were saying that he is undergoing some weight transformation, with the help of one slimming company, and may end up as an ambassador for that slimming company. I look forward to his new look, and new life.

4. Is exercise the only way to lose weight?

When talk about losing weight, perhaps the most given advice is to exercise.

To most lay men or women who has never been overweight or don’t care if they are overweight, weight gain has always been associated with 2 main things, overeating and laziness to exercise. There is no doubt if you overeat on a daily or frequent basis, even with whatever diet, including vegetarian diet, you will definitely put on weight, sooner or later in life. If you are one of those who think that not eating meat won’t make you put on weight, think again. They are tons of evident that our body don’t work that way. If you are staying in Singapore, go and see if there are any fat people who are eating  vegetarian food, Don’t be surprised to see even the hawker himself is a fat person. Let’s put the diet thing to another time and talk about exercise. As for the lack of exercise, I always have lots of question about it.

  1. How much exercise will a person need in order to lose or maintain weight?
  2. What kind of exercise to do, aerobics or weights?
  3. Is exercise the only way to lose weight?

How much exercise will a person need in order to lose or maintain weight?

There are many sayings about how much exercise you need to do in order to lose some weight. Some say that you will need to run for at least 30 minutes non-stop, some say that you will need to raise your heart beat to a certain level. But there are many who suggested that even light exercise like strolling in the park, or climbing up the stair if you are staying on the 10th floor, or practising Tai-Chi. Some even incredible ones suggested that half squatting up and down while brushing your teeth will help you lose weight, seen that one before? Probably in some morning show with mostly only housewife will watch, and even believe. Ha ha, if doing that can make someone lose weight, many people including me, will probably be a walking skeleton, unless you are one of those weirdo that brush your teeth for half an hour.

For me, after years of exerciing and following a low carbo diet, although I believe that it is what you eat that determined your weight, it is still important to have some exercises in your life. But in terms of the weight you can lose through exercise, this is what I think. You will only lose weight if the exercise you do, did not affect the way and amount you eat. Meaning, if you have say, eaten 3 bowl of rice, 3 can of soft drink today, and if you were to do some exercise tomorrow, you cannot eat 4 bowl of rice, and 4 can of soft drink. Simple logic right? But trust me; it is not as easy as it sound. First, most people do not monitor what they eat, and second, it is not only the amount, but also the type of food that you have eaten. But as to my experience, exercise will make you hungrier, thirstier, not only right after the exercise, but throughout the whole day. You will tend to eat and drink more, not only because of physical needs, but for mental one as well. For me, every time I did some heavy work especially under the bloody hot sun, I will definitely comfort myself with cooler and sweeter drink. I believe most people will do that, although you may argue that I am the one with the weak will. Sometimes, because of the 2 to 3 hours of basketball under the Sunday morning hot sun, I feel tired and hungry throughout the whole day, and lose some control in the type and amount of food I eat, and do you believe it or not, I will even gain some weight instead of losing it. And I am not talking about total lost of control, probably just an extra can of soft drinks or a piece of cake! Sometimes I wonder if drinking too much cold water will cause me to gain weight or not, because I know that cool or cold water will bring down your temperature, so theoretical, your metabolism will slow down. And back to the question on how much exercise one need to do in order to lose weight, I have many times, not have any activities throughout the whole day, but I know just because I was able to follow my diet properly that day, I manage to see half a kilo gone the next day. I have been weighing myself every morning since at least 10 years ago, and I assure you, I don’t think it is my scale doing tricks. So, my conclusion for this chapter is, exercise will help you lose weight no matter what kind and how much exercise you do, as long as you did not alter your so call correct diet. Except that if the exercise you are talking about is the half squatting up and down while brushing your teeth, because I usually brush my teeth for only 2 mnutes, ha ha!

What kind of exercise to do, aerobics or weights?

Just like what I mentioned above, it doesn’t really matter. But I believe in long run, I think weights lifting exercise is a better exercise if you are able to build muscles, as muscle will increase your over metabolism, I think especially important, your basal  metabolism. In case you are wondering what the different, basal metabolism is the amount of energy you can burn while you are asleep. So imagine if you have a good basal metabolism, you will always wake up half kilo lighter. This is a great advantage, isn’t it?

Is exercise the only way to lose weight?

I strongly disagree. I can name at least 5 other ways of losing weight other than doing exercise. Deep breathing is one of them, although I considered it an exercise too, but overall, it is unlike the usual kind of exercises that involve moving around. The main part you will need to move while doing breathing exercise is your lungs and diaphragm.

There is also acupuncture, which many don’t believe that it works. I was fortunate to have done it before, free, from a TCM free clinic when I was 17 years old. I was there for my arthritis problem but the physician, seeing that I was overweight, used me as a guinea pig. It works for me, and because it did work, I was curious so I went to read something about it. What it does is that it actually helps me with my bowel movements, making me shit more than usual, but not the diarrhoea type. I was curious that why they always ask me one question that if my stools float or sink, only many years later than I read that if your stools float, it means that you are passing out oil and fats in your food. So, it seems that some how the acupuncture is able to force oil and fat out of your bowel, strange right?

There is hydro pool treatment. This is also a very relaxing way of losing weight. What you just need to do is to stay in the whirling warm water and wah lah, you will lose some weight. Actually this is a simple theory, if you soak yourself for half an hour in warm water; your body temperature will raise and therefore have some burning effect. The whirling water if strong enough, will cause you to be push away and thus in order to stay in the same spot, you got to apply a bit of pushing force.

There is massage, my personal favourite way of losing weight, where you just need to lie down and let a women grope all over your body. Ha ha, for all those dirty old man reading this, actually this is not the way it should be, a good massage with some weight loss effect, may not be as comforting as the usual relax type of massage. It may even be a bit painful, with a strong masseur vigorously stroking and rubbing your joints. The pain may even be greater after the massage session and may even last for a few days. This is probably the feeling you get from a normal physical exercise especially if you have not done any exercise for a while already.

The last one I like to mention is slimming products. Just like any of the above mentioned, all will work in terms of losing some weight, if you do them correctly and regularly, provided that you are eating the same amount and type of food.

So, I believe there are many, many more different methods than exercise that can make one lose weight. But again I will have to emphasize, exercise alone won’t help you lose weight, if not, how come sumo wrestler are mostly fat?
