How many kinds of nutrients are there and how much do we need to consume per day?

How many kinds of nutrients are there and how much do we need to consume per day?

Today, out of nowhere, I asked myself this question. And surprisingly, as I always thought myself as a health freak, I do not know the answer. So I decided to search the web for some answers, and surprisingly again, it wasn’t easy to find an answer…..

The answers that I found were mostly general or with partial details. And some sites were just trying to sell something. Examples: Some site states that there are 6 essential nutrients which is protein, fat, vitamin, carbohydrate, mineral and water, then, period. And some others show either the list of all the vitamins, or the list of all the minerals. And some sites state that if you take their Acai and Maqui Berry pills you will live till 100 years old. It seems like the most objective and comprehensive site is still Wiki.

And what about supplements like Coq-10, Melatonin, Prebiotics or Probiotics? What is their classification? I think Coq-10 is an enzyme, but what about the others? I am sure that there are many other products with funny names that are sold in public health stores like GNC and Holland & Barrett.

So after spending a few hours reading and searching, I decided that I can be better than Wiki. I will try to place the list of all the 6 essential nutrients, with break down and it’s RDA.

But just in a few minutes, I realized that this is not going to be easy….but I will still try anyway.

It will probably take a few weeks…..

We need to eat 60 oranges a day.

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by aaremoval on 26-06-2013

In this modern world, all of us from the developed countries know that we all need supplements. The nutrients we are getting from our food are simply not enough, unless if you don’t mind dying at 50 years old. To want to live to 100 years old, food alone is simply not enough, or should I say, will be too much for one to eat. Get what I mean?

Examples: I am constipated. So my personal nutritionist or my friend from a MLM company tells me: “You need more vitamin C!” So I either asked them directly how much will I need, or if I don’t believe them because they are just giving me free advises that will lead to a sale, or may be my friend giving me the free advises looks more constipated than I am, I will probably check up the internet, before I buy any vitamin c supplements.

But as I see it, you will get the same advises on most internet sites. I think most site will tell you that you will need at least 500mg per day, this is for mild constipation, but if you are seriously constipated, you will need 1000 to 2000mg. But do we really need so much? If not, why do most advises from the internet tell you so? I think there may be 2 reasons.

The first one is that most people who submit articles or blog online are people who are selling health supplements. And most vitamins C come in form of at least 500mg, so it doesn’t make sense for them to tell you that the RDA intake is just 50mg, where you can just get by eating 3 oranges. But on the other hand, if they tell you that you will need at least 1000mg a day, most people will go for supplements unless they don’t mind to spend hours buying and cutting orange, or don’t mind eating 60 oranges a day.

The second reason is simple. Who will write a blog telling people that all they need is to eat 3 oranges a day to get the RDA intake? That would be like 5 sentences worth of blog…..

As for me, I feel quite fortunate to live in an era like this where they can compress 60 oranges in one pill, as I am a believer that this is the minimum amount that we need in a day. And apart from vitamin C, I am taking a lot of other supplements. So if I were to be born 30 years earlier, I will need to eat 60 oranges, 30 bananas, 5 kg of spinach, 5 kg of potatoes and 5 kg of sweet potatoes…..all in one day, in hope to live till 100 years old.

DAY 2

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by aaremoval on 26-06-2013

There are many kinds of diets.

The first one I have learnt in my life is the low calorie diet. I was in my teenage years when I first heard of the word diet, as in a weight loss diet. I read all these articles mostly from the local newspaper; they were mostly short and sharp. Examples:

· If you want to lose weight, eat more fruits and vegetables, and less meat.

· If you want to lose weight, it is better to eat white meat than red meat.

· If you want to lose weight, drink soup daily.

· If you want to lose weight, don’t add too much gravy to your rice.

· If you want to lose weight, don’t drink soda; go for milk or tea or juice.

I was about 16 years old back then and it was the 80’s. There were no internets back then, so there was no way to go deeper into the details. But since I was a chubby boy who decided to turn myself into Prince Charming, I tried to follow some of the diets by:

eating more fruits and vegetables, more white meat, more soup, more rice and more milk and juice, in every meal…which led to me eating more calories, and worse, more carbohydrates.

Most of the articles from the newspaper were too short to give the topic on portion control. The message that I got from all these short and sharp articles was that, all these foods will help you lose weight as if they are like fat burners. Get it? It is like saying the more you eat of these food, the thinner you will become. Just like you will probably lose more weight from eating 10 fat burning pills a day than eating 1 fat burning pill per day. Only that most people don’t go for 10 pills because they can’t afford them.

It makes sense to me back then as this is what they have stated: to lose weight, eat MORE fruits and vegetables. So I ate more and more and wonder why am I gaining weight despite following what the experts have taught.

And guess what? Nowadays there are more and more articles claiming that due to the high antioxidants level in some dark chocolate, coffee and fruits, they will help you lose weight…..
