There are many kinds of diets.

The first one I have learnt in my life is the low calorie diet. I was in my teenage years when I first heard of the word diet, as in a weight loss diet. I read all these articles mostly from the local newspaper; they were mostly short and sharp. Examples:

· If you want to lose weight, eat more fruits and vegetables, and less meat.

· If you want to lose weight, it is better to eat white meat than red meat.

· If you want to lose weight, drink soup daily.

· If you want to lose weight, don’t add too much gravy to your rice.

· If you want to lose weight, don’t drink soda; go for milk or tea or juice.

I was about 16 years old back then and it was the 80’s. There were no internets back then, so there was no way to go deeper into the details. But since I was a chubby boy who decided to turn myself into Prince Charming, I tried to follow some of the diets by:

eating more fruits and vegetables, more white meat, more soup, more rice and more milk and juice, in every meal…which led to me eating more calories, and worse, more carbohydrates.

Most of the articles from the newspaper were too short to give the topic on portion control. The message that I got from all these short and sharp articles was that, all these foods will help you lose weight as if they are like fat burners. Get it? It is like saying the more you eat of these food, the thinner you will become. Just like you will probably lose more weight from eating 10 fat burning pills a day than eating 1 fat burning pill per day. Only that most people don’t go for 10 pills because they can’t afford them.

It makes sense to me back then as this is what they have stated: to lose weight, eat MORE fruits and vegetables. So I ate more and more and wonder why am I gaining weight despite following what the experts have taught.

And guess what? Nowadays there are more and more articles claiming that due to the high antioxidants level in some dark chocolate, coffee and fruits, they will help you lose weight…..
